Sometimes getting the latest and greatest with Apple products isn't really needed. I've used the 2nd generation iPad for 4 years now and have had no problems with speed, battery life or needing to upgrade to the newest version.
There's also the dilemma of how skinny Apple is starting to make the new iPads and phones. Making devices skinnier + kids = disaster! Why not go with the older version that pretty much does all the same stuff for 1/4 the price?
The iPad 2 has everything the latest iPads have minus a few features most moms would barely use. If you plan on using it for school, games or social networks the iPad 2 has everything you need and more!
